Calcium Cored Wire

What is calcium cored wire?

Calcium cored wire, as its name indicates, it is a kind of cored wire that is made of calcium metal and other auxiliary elements. Its major application is deoxidizer. Most of people think that oxygen is a paramount element in our lives. While, it is not the case, every coin has two sides, for example, in some times, it is a “bad” element especially during steelmaking. Strength, ductility, toughness and other properties for steel were reduced due to high oxygen content. This is the reason why it is called “bad” element. Thus, it is necessary to add deoxidizer in steelmaking process in order to remove oxygen as far as possible. As we mentioned above, calcium cored wire is just right mainly used as deoxidizer, it is a good deoxidizer to reduce oxygen content in steelmaking.

Uses of calcium cored wire

Iron and smelting steel industry is main application field for calcium cored wire. It can reduce oxygen content in smelting steel process prominently as deoxidizer.

Additionally, calcium cored wire can be also used in many other applications, these are as below:

  • Desulphurization:

Employed for desulphurization, calcium cored wire reacts with sulphur in molten steel to create calcium sulphide, which is then removed as slag. This reduces sulphur content, a crucial step in steel production to achieve desired material properties and prevent defects in the final product.

  • Modifying Inclusions And Controlling Non-metallic Inclusions:

Calcium cored wire plays a key role in modifying and controlling inclusions in steel. By controlling the size, shape, and distribution of inclusions, it significantly improves mechanical properties, contributing to the overall quality and performance of the steel.

  • Alloying Element Addition:

In some applications, calcium cored wire acts as a carrier for alloying elements. This facilitates the controlled introduction of specific elements into molten steel, allowing for precise adjustments to the steel composition to meet desired specifications.

  • Improving Castability:

Adding calcium cored wire enhances the castability of molten steel, making it more suitable for various casting processes. This improvement in castability contributes to the efficiency of steel production and the quality of the final cast products.

  • Calcium Treatment in Ladle Furnaces:

Widely used in ladle treatment, calcium cored wire aids in refining steel composition and reducing impurities before casting. This process is crucial to achieve the desired steel properties.
