What are the Calcium Wire and Calcium Cored Wire?
Many people have such a misunderstanding about cored wire, exactly calcium wire. They think that calcium wire is same as calcium cored wire, only difference in name. Unfortunately, in fact, it is not. Frankly speaking, calcium wire is made of pure calcium metal in wire shape and calcium cored wire is calcium wire wrapped with steel strips.
Specification of Calcium Cored Wire

Mg: 0.8% max;
Al: 0.8% max
Uses of Calcium Cored Wire
When it comes to calcium metal, we believe that most of people know about its properties clearly whatever physical or chemical. It is a very active metal and usually used in deoxidation, desulphurization and degassing in steelmaking. Calcium-lead can improve corrosion resistance and strength. In the producing process of high purity steel and non-ferrous alloy, it is used as deoxidizer. What’s more, in lead industry, it can be used as an alloy substance to produce maintenance-free automotive batteries.
Producing Method of Calcium Metal
Generally speaking, there are two methods for producing metallic calcium: electrolysis and thermite method. We introduce electrolysis method at first.
Its purity is above 98% generally by electrolysis method and even up to 99.5% after sublimating.
In terms of thermite method, its purity doesn’t reach so high whether further sublimation or not. Meanwhile, it generates some impurities, such as magnesium and aluminium. Content of them is higher than that of electrolytic calcium metal.
As for its physical properties, recovery rate and the loss. There are some differences between calcium metal produced by electrolysis and thermite. Concretely speaking, it is soft and easier to process relatively for electrolysis with a higher recovery rate. And the loss is relatively small during the process of finished products. Vice versa.
Merits of Calcium Cored Wire
High yield rate: After feeding solid pure calcium cored wire produced by our factory, Ca yield rate for low-carbon steel up to an average of more than 10%. And Ca usage efficiency is 40% approximately higher than that of calcium silicon cored wire;
Unobstructed nozzle: it eliminates and reduces the phenomenon of clogging the nozzle for continuously casting steel;
Low costs: When you use solid pure calcium cored wire, the feeding weight per ton of steel is about 30% of that of calcium silicon cored wire;
Low work intensity.
Technical Standards and Functions
Our calcium cored wire meets rigorous technical standards and offers several functional advantages:
To ensure optimal performance, we use cold-rolled bright steel strip with increased thickness compared with calcium-iron cored wire. This thicker steel strip effectively covers the pure calcium core, resulting in a solid pure calcium cored wire with a diameter of 9.5±0.5mm.
The calcium cored wire is characterized by its uniform wire diameter, high tensile strength, and excellent toughness, making it highly resistant to breakage. This characteristic facilitates precise control of the wire feeding amount, ensuring accurate and consistent results.
By utilizing existing wire feeding equipment, our calcium cored wire enables deeper molten steel feeding depths at lower wire feeding speeds. This allows for easy and accurate control of the wire feeding amount, ensuring a stable wire feeding process.
The dense and tightly wrapped structure of our calcium cored wire ensures longer storage periods without compromising its effectiveness during use. This guarantees consistent and reliable performance in steelmaking operations.
